Project's Summary

The Alternative Entrance to Gorky Park represents a remarkable initiative by Wowhaus, focusing on enhancing urban permeability through innovative design. Situated at the intersection of nature and architecture, this new pedestrian pathway seamlessly connects Gorky Park with Leninsky Avenue, offering a fresh perspective on urban public spaces. The project emphasizes the importance of accessibility and community engagement, making the park more inviting and navigable for residents and visitors alike.

At the heart of this project lies a grand staircase accompanied by a beautifully landscaped garden. The design pays homage to historical architectural plans from the late 1920s, incorporating a cross-cutting pedestrian pathway that not only enhances the flow of human traffic but also creates a vibrant public realm. As visitors ascend the staircase, they are greeted by an amphitheater-style seating area that fosters social interaction and community gatherings, further engaging the public in the park's offerings.

One of the standout features of the Alternative Entrance is the stunning viewpoint that provides a panoramic vista of Moscow city, a perspective that has remained largely unseen until now. This unique vantage point invites visitors to pause and appreciate the urban landscape, encouraging them to connect with their surroundings. The project’s design utilizes durable materials such as granite and architectural concrete, ensuring that the pathway remains both functional and aesthetically pleasing throughout the seasons.

The landscape garden serves as a central hub for outdoor sculptures and installations, curated by Garage, which enhances the cultural richness of the area. Perennials are strategically planted to ensure continuous blooms throughout the summer, while brightly stemmed plants add a touch of vibrancy during the winter months. This thoughtful planting strategy not only beautifies the space but also contributes to the ecological health of the urban environment.

Illumination plays a crucial role in the design, as various scenarios create functional separation while accentuating the spatiality and composition of the architectural layout. Completed in September 2018, the new passage has opened its doors to the public, inviting them to experience a transformative urban environment that harmonizes nature with contemporary design. The Alternative Entrance to Gorky Park stands as a testament to the potential of urban architecture to foster community connections and enhance the quality of life in Moscow.
