Designed by the _naturehumaine architectural studio, the Alexandra Residence in Montreal's trendy Mile-Ex district is a stunning example of a live/work house that seamlessly blends contemporary design with an emphasis on maximizing natural light. Spanning an impressive 3300 sqft, this new construction project posed a unique challenge due to the east-west orientation of the infill lot. However, the ingenious design solution employed by the architects ensures that every corner of the house is flooded with an abundance of light.

To overcome the limitations of the lot's orientation, the architects incorporated a two-story light-well that runs the length of the southern side of the house. This light-well acts as a central core, bringing natural light deep into the heart of the home. Situated atop the northern edge of the light-well is the client's office space, a sleek white volume that not only adds a touch of modernity but also reflects light back into the core. The second-story spaces also benefit from the luminosity of the light-well, with fully glazed walls adjacent to it. Furthermore, a floor-to-ceiling frosted glass panel in the bathroom softens the light, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

The back facade of the Alexandra Residence is a striking display of angular geometry, defined by a floating steel box. In contrast, the front facade pays homage to the heritage character of the neighborhood with its predominantly brick composition. To add a touch of contemporary flair, two disjuncted apertures lined with aluminum break up the brick facade. The architects took a creative approach with the brickwork, incorporating a random mix of forward and backward facing bricks to create a dynamic and visually appealing facade.

The Alexandra Residence is a testament to the innovative design solutions employed by the _naturehumaine architectural studio. By maximizing the use of natural light, this live/work house not only creates a bright and inviting atmosphere but also showcases the seamless integration of modern design within a historical context.
