Project's Summary

Resilient Power Puerto Rico (RPPR) represents a beacon of hope in the wake of the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. These catastrophic events left Puerto Rico grappling with a complete collapse of its energy grid and infrastructure. The architectural initiative, driven by Marvel Architects, Landscape Architects, Urban Designers, PLLC, seeks to address this humanitarian crisis through sustainable design and innovative solutions. By harnessing the power of photovoltaic energy systems, RPPR aims to restore essential services to the communities most severely impacted by the storms, ensuring that the people of Puerto Rico can regain their independence and resilience.

The project is fundamentally philanthropic, relying on donations and collaborative efforts from a network of supporters based in New York and Puerto Rico. The primary objective is to deliver solar power systems that not only provide electricity but also maintain vital services such as water supply and communications. This multifaceted approach reflects a broader vision: to revolutionize the relationship between energy systems and the built environment in Puerto Rico. By creating redundancy in the power supply, RPPR is not simply restoring what was lost; it is laying the groundwork for a more resilient future capable of withstanding future natural disasters.

In its first phase, RPPR has set an ambitious target to power 200 community centers and clinics across the islands, acting as lifelines for the residents who rely on them for support and assistance. The second phase will broaden the project's impact with larger-scale installations, focusing on strategic partnerships that promote community development. To date, RPPR has successfully completed over 16 installations and raised more than $1.2 million in donations, illustrating the power of community engagement in driving meaningful change. This year alone, an additional thirty sites are slated for installation, timed to be operational before the onset of peak hurricane season.

RPPR exemplifies the transformative potential of architecture and design in responding to humanitarian needs. By employing innovative design strategies, the project not only addresses immediate energy needs but also fosters a spirit of hope and resilience among the people of Puerto Rico. The journey of RPPR underscores the critical importance of creating sustainable solutions that are adaptable to the challenges posed by natural disasters. As the initiative continues to grow, it holds the promise of significantly improving the energy landscape and infrastructure of Puerto Rico, ultimately illuminating the path toward recovery and renewal.

The ongoing efforts of Resilient Power Puerto Rico are a testament to the vital role that architects and urban designers play in disaster recovery. By prioritizing energy resilience, RPPR is not only restoring power but also empowering communities to thrive in the face of adversity. As the project evolves, it aims to inspire similar initiatives across the globe, showcasing the vital intersection of humanitarian efforts and architectural innovation. With every installation, RPPR is lighting the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for Puerto Rico, proving that even in the darkest times, hope can be harnessed through the power of design.
