Transforming Grand Center: Public Media Commons Unites Arts and Public Space
Project's Summary
The Public Media Commons project, created by the Cobalt Office architectural studio, is set to transform the heart of the Grand Center Arts District in St. Louis. Spanning over 15,000 square feet, this media-rich plaza and outdoor studio will bring together local Public Television (KETC), Radio (KWMU), and the arts in an unprecedented synthesis of public media and public space.
To visually define the space of the Commons, the existing facades have been treated with white perforated panels and illuminated by programmable LED uplighting. This creates a captivating "white room" effect that prepares the surfaces for media expression, including large-format projection and LED displays. Visitors will be able to catch a glimpse behind the scenes with a new window into KETC Studio B, while interactive LCD virtual windows provide opportunities for engagement with the content generated within.
One unique feature of the Commons is the perforated QR patterns that encourage interaction between the physical space and the virtual world of media and mobile devices. This innovative concept potentially allows visitors to create and display their own content through the interactive QR facade. Furthermore, the intricate patterning of the panels lends a distinct visual identity to the space, making it truly one-of-a-kind.
The plaza itself boasts a welcoming forecourt entry and a spacious central gathering area, perfect for hosting various events. Surrounding the Commons are two noteworthy elements – the Broadcast Platform and the Grove. The elevated Broadcast Platform serves as a versatile space that can be used as a café terrace or a stage for events, providing visitors with a chance to peek inside Studio B. On the other hand, the Grove offers a serene and shaded hangout spot. Steps that traverse the grade toward the Fox Theater integrate seating, creating a relaxing space for spectators. At the base of the steps, the "whisper gallery" amplifies spoken voices over the outdoor sound system, adding a touch of enchantment to the ambiance.
The Public Media Commons project, a collaboration between Cobalt Office, Benjamin Gilmartin Architect, and Powers Bowersox Associates, is a testament to the seamless integration of media and public space. With its visually striking design and interactive features, the Commons promises to be a vibrant hub that brings together the local community and fosters engagement with public media in a new and exciting way.
