Project's Summary

POPULISTA: Celebrating Italian Television Culture through Design

When tasked with designing a restaurant that showcases local products, I immediately thought of creating a popular Osteria. However, instead of delving into the rural traditions that underpin Italian popular culture, I decided to explore its evolution through television, starting from the 1950s. This led me to adorn the walls of the establishment with reproductions of iconic figures, catchphrases, lifestyles, advertisements, images, and symbols that have shaped Italian television history over the past five decades.

As I embarked on this journey through time, I stumbled upon photographs of Domenico Modugno joyfully belting out "Volare" with his arms outstretched and Mike Bongiorno warmly greeting everyone with his signature "Allegria." These images, paired with the simple pleasure of indulging in a tigella topped with authentic Parma ham and accompanied by a glass of Lambrusco wine, transported me to a quintessentially Italian experience. It made me feel undeniably connected to my roots, as if I were a part of a larger cultural narrative. In fact, I believe that even Michelangelo and Dante themselves would have embraced this homage to Italian television culture.

And so, I aptly named this establishment POPULISTA, a tribute to the rich tapestry of Italian popular culture. The restaurant serves as a testament to the profound impact that television has had on shaping our collective identity and the way we perceive ourselves as Italians. It celebrates the familiar faces, catchy slogans, and cherished memories that have become ingrained in our national consciousness over the years.

POPULISTA is not just a restaurant; it is a time capsule that encapsulates the essence of Italian television culture. Stepping into this space is like stepping back in time, immersing oneself in the vibrant energy and nostalgia of the past. The walls adorned with photographs, quotes, and memorabilia serve as a visual reminder of the shared experiences that have shaped us as a nation.

Furthermore, POPULISTA aims to foster a sense of community and connection among its patrons. By evoking memories and sparking conversations about classic television moments, it creates a space for people to come together and reminisce. It is a place that invites guests to share their own stories and experiences, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and celebration.

In conclusion, POPULISTA is more than just a restaurant; it is a testament to the power of television in shaping culture and identity. By paying homage to Italian television history, it invites visitors to embark on a journey of nostalgia and rediscovery. So come, indulge in a tigella and a glass of Lambrusco, and let the vibrant spirit of POPULISTA transport you to a bygone era of Italian popular culture.
