Pôle Cristal: Innovative Cold Technology Research Facility
Project's Summary
Pole Cristal: A Research Facility for Cold Technology and Air Conditioning
Located in the ZAC de Beaumanoir, northwest of the commune of Dinan, the Pole Cristal is a research facility dedicated to cold technology and air conditioning. The project was undertaken by the architectural studio Kraft Architectes, who transformed an old military garage into a modern research center. The facility is comprised of a single large volume, divided into two zones: a BBC tertiary zone and a workshop zone.
Preserving the Industrial Aesthetic
The designers of the Pole Cristal were able to preserve the industrial aesthetic of the old military garage while creating a functional and modern research facility. The metal framework of the garage was exposed and enhanced, giving the facility a raw and industrial look. The interior of the facility was designed with two zones, which are connected by stairs and atriums. The BBC tertiary zone is dedicated to research and experimentation, while the workshop zone is for practical applications of the research.
Minimalist Exterior Design
The exterior design of the Pole Cristal is minimalist, yet striking. The old garage doors were replaced with large, steel accordion windows, which allow natural light to flood the interior of the facility. The building's facade was covered with a structured coating, which was created using a serrated comb. The entire surface of the coating was painted with a medium gray, and then the upper parts of the grooves were painted in four different shades, each in three different widths. The result is a subtle play of colors and textures, which can only be fully appreciated up close.
Innovative Research for a Sustainable Future
The Pole Cristal is a state-of-the-art research facility that is dedicated to finding innovative solutions for cold technology and air conditioning. The facility's researchers are committed to developing sustainable and energy-efficient technologies that will help to reduce the impact of climate change. The Pole Cristal is a shining example of how modern design and technology can be used to create a better future for all.
In conclusion, the Pole Cristal is a remarkable achievement in both design and function. The Kraft Architectes studio has succeeded in transforming an old military garage into a modern research facility, while preserving the industrial aesthetic of the original building. The Pole Cristal represents a commitment to innovation and sustainability, and its researchers are working hard to create a better future for us all.
