Immersive Retail Design: LJ Cross Store Experience
Project's Summary
Immersive Retail: The LJ Cross Store Experience
The LJ Cross store at 994 Madison Avenue offers a unique retail experience that immerses shoppers in a space that is completely coated in material. The walls are sculpted in white corian, while the ceiling and floor are made of Belgian Oak. The entire store is designed to feel like a display in and of itself, with a continuous ribbon of Corian that wraps around the space, hovering between the wood floor and ceiling.
The displays at LJ Cross are carved from the Corian wall surfaces, creating a sense of symmetry and elegance in the space. The carving in the walls was composed of overlapping cruciform shapes, with the leftover spaces between these shapes becoming the display niches. The lighting that is composed in these display niches reinforces this composition of figure and ground, with layered lighting that brings hierarchy to the items floating in these volumes.
To maintain the sense of immersion, the displays themselves are meant to feel as if they are a part of the sculpture of the space. Instead of individual cases or racks, LJ Cross displays are carved from the Corian wall surfaces, creating a sense of continuity in relation to the floating presence of the carved display lighting. The lighting within the displays is layered, with a continuous ambient layer that fills the carved volumes with light, and another that is very specific accent light that brings hierarchy to the items floating in these volumes.

The result is an immersive retail experience that engages shoppers and encourages them to explore the space.
