Project's Summary

The 'Life during the War' exhibition presents a profound exploration of life in the Soviet Union during World War II. Curated by Form Bureau, this exhibition is not merely a display of artifacts but a vivid recounting of the resilience and spirit of a nation during one of its darkest times. Located in the Central Pavilion at VDNKH in Moscow, the exhibition serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of daily life amidst the chaos of war.

Upon entering the exhibition, visitors are greeted by a striking wooden pergola illuminated by round 'park' lights, creating an atmosphere that evokes nostalgia. This central feature invites guests to walk through 'alleyways' lined with objects that tell stories of the era. From factory machinery to children’s toys, each item is carefully chosen to reflect the dualities of war and peace, encapsulating the essence of life during this tumultuous period.

The exhibition is thoughtfully divided into three themed halls, each offering a unique perspective on the wartime experience. The first hall transports visitors to the front lines, showcasing the departure of soldiers, the vital role of the field post, and multimedia presentations featuring audio and video from the battlefield. This immersive experience allows attendees to grasp the emotional weight of separation and sacrifice faced by countless families.

In contrast, the second hall delves into the urban experience during the war. It highlights the transformation of cities under siege, showcasing the art of camouflage and the construction of anti-tank barricades. Through personal belongings and wartime artwork, visitors can appreciate the creativity and resourcefulness of those who lived through the bombings, offering a stark reminder of the human spirit's ability to endure.

The final hall celebrates the triumph of the Soviet people, united in their unwavering faith in victory. This section features footage from the 1945 victory parade and displays victory-themed paintings that encapsulate the spirit of hope and resilience. The 'Life during the War' exhibition is a testament to the strength of a community that, despite the horrors of war, remained steadfast in their belief in a brighter future.
