Project's Summary

The Le Soufflet project, undertaken by the _naturehumaine architectural studio, is set to completely transform and extend a commercial building located on Beaubien Street. The design of the building aims to capture the essence of the surrounding area, incorporating both the superposition of commercial uses and a reimagined two-storey base, which serves as the foundation for an additional floor. The standout feature of this new floor is a monolithic steel roof, elegantly complemented by a longitudinal band of black windows.

The project's conceptual idea revolves around providing a panoramic view of the beautiful Molson park's trees. This vision is brought to life through the terrace on the roof, which showcases a series of sunbreakers inspired by the folding cameras of old, known as "appareil photo à soufflet" in French. The black structure of the terrace not only aligns the scale of the project with its neighboring buildings but also presents a contemporary interpretation of pergola architecture. By incorporating a succession of vertical brick details and regular windows, the design enhances the perception of depth created by the side alley.

The third floor of the building is dedicated to office space, ingeniously organized into a series of interconnected plans. The conference room, strategically positioned at the front, offers a seamless visual connection with the terrace. Natural light floods the lobby and circulation areas through skylights, creating a welcoming and well-lit environment. As a nod to the building's history, several original lamps have been reintroduced, providing a striking contrast against the new minimalist suspensions. Glass partitions reveal white oak storage units, allowing for a sense of regular space organization from the corridor.

To add vibrancy to the overall project, the predominantly monochrome tones are punctuated with bright colors. The services section is highlighted by a vibrant blue block, while a bold red hue emanates from the exit staircase. This clever use of color not only adds visual interest but also aids in wayfinding within the building.

The Le Soufflet project by the _naturehumaine architectural studio is a testament to their skillful reinterpretation of an existing commercial building. Through the incorporation of panoramic views, contemporary design elements, and thoughtful details, the building seamlessly blends into the fabric of the surrounding neighborhood while offering a fresh and inviting space for its occupants.
